ASK JENI

Now that my friend is a bit more settled with baby (her son is around the same age as my baby - 3 months!) I am pretty sure that its safe to offer the "ask jeni" segment again on this blog.

As you all know (or might not know) my friend Jeni is VERY knowledgeable in the fertility area, shes got allow of knowledge and experience to back her up. Shes suffered her own m/c and able to conceive right after as well with facing her own fertility problems. So with this blog post, you can either post in the comments section your questions about fertility, something you might have heard and want to double check, or ask for advice in regards to your own situation and she will answer you in the same comments section. If your a bit leery about posting your info (this can be done by anon though in the comment section) You can email me cheri22@gmail.com and put in "Ask Jeni" in the subject line and I will forward her your email. She will try to answer as many as she can.

For me, I am heading to the lab today. For the past 10 days now I have had a really bad stomach ache (cramps/gas) and because I am still breastfeeding I can't take anything for it (like pepto!) So headed to the dr yesterday and it "might" be an infection in my stomach. I have never had anything like this last more than a day, and here we are on day 10! Wish me luck that its something "simple" and this test can just prove that. I have to make a dr appt next week as well to get the results!

Hi Jeni! I've been taking clomid for 4 cycles now (2 unsuccessful, 1 successful- prog. level 54! and still awaiting b/w from round 4). Do you feel like this is the right path for me? I don't know if I need to get more proactive and see an r.e. or just go along with the clomid 150 for a few more cycles. also, i never have heavy periods...i realize this might effect the thickness of my lining-- do i need to be worried about that? thanks for your help!

Hi Jeni,
My husband and I have been trying to conceive for over three years. I have done 2 fresh IVF cycles and 3 frozen cycles. One miscarriage last October. We also did about 6 IUI's before the IVF's. Now we are running out of money and trying to go back to IUI's. I have endometriosis and am 38 years old. Other than that, all is good. Hubby has GREAT swimmers. I stimulate well and no problems ovulating.
Is there something I'm missing? I refuse to give up on my dream of being a mommy. I could use any help or advice you may have.

Thank you in advance,
jmd

Hi Jeni.
My cycles are normally 27-28 days. Last month it was 4-5 days early. I always get O cramps and fertile CM, I O, get sore boobs, then 14(ish) days later, AF arrives. This cycle, I got CM, had cramps and thats it. I do not have sore boobs, still have a bit of CM (creamy to watery). I'm 3dpJonas Method (Monday). I don't temp (due to job) or use opk's because I get the cramps and CM, then the next day its gone! So I can tell when I O'd. My question: Did I O this cycle? or is it something else? Like pg?

Answer:

Hello Dayna!! The only way to know if this cycle is a fluke or a pregnancy is to test!! Since you had the usual cramps and CM, I would guess you did ovulate if this is typical for you. However, it IS possible your body just had an "off" cycle and you either did not ovulate or you ovulated late. This happens to almost all women about once a year.

I would say that if you ARE 14 days past ovulation according to what you observed, TAKE A TEST and GOOD LUCK!!!! : ) If it is negative and a week later, AF is still on vacation, test again. : ) If still not, it is a fluke cycle.

Jeni.

Answer:

Hello! It is unclear to me as to what you are on Metformin for.. I know it is used for people with PCOS to help become pregnant and is also used for type 2 diabetes. I would say that while TTC, you need to do what is best for you. If the med makes you sick, I would say do not take it unless your Dr thinks it will help you get pregnant. Are you on Clomid? If you have not tried Clomid, I would suggest you ask about that as well. You are more likely to become pregnant on Clomid than if you took Metformin alone, especially if you have PCOS!

Good Luck!!

Answer:

Hello, JMD! I am sorry to hear about your loss. : ( This is a little bit of a "tougher" situation where you guys are concerned. Exactly what stage endometriosis do you have? I know of a few women with Endo who have had surgery to remove the scar tissue and become pregnant after the procedure. Sometimes the scar tissue can have something (or a lot) to do with your ability to become pregnant. Talk to your Dr about whether or not a surgery to remove the endo is an option for you!!

The good news is that you have become pregnant once already. That shows that it is not *impossible* though it is harder. If your hubby has great swimmers and you stimulate well, I get a feeling it is the condition of your endo or maybe even the thickness of your uterine lining. If you have been able to continue with IVF cycles, that means when they were watching you, your lining was pretty good. Otherwise the cycle would have been canceled.

If your RE does not agree with you and will not work with you, find one who will work WITH YOU. First, please start by asking about a procedure to remove the scar tissue! I think it could open some doors for you and your Husband.

Good Luck!!

Answer:

Hello! This "successful" clomid cycle you mentioned-- did it result in the birth of a child?? I would say that if ROUND 4 is actually Round 1 TTC #2 and it worked for you before, stick with it!! I would always give TTC a good 3 cycles on Clomid before giving up. Your chance of conceiving on Clomid is up to 33% from the average 20% per cycle in people who do not have fertility issues. MOST women who will become pregnant using clomid will become pregnant in 3 cycles.

If clomid round 4 is round 4 TTC#1, meaning the successful one ended in M/C, I would give it one more cycle after this one and then off to the RE!!

Clomid can affect the uterine lining. If you are concerned, see if your Doc will do an U/S to measure it. It is said that it has to be at or above 8mm to be able to host an embryo!! If you have become pregnant once on Clomid already, chances are your lining is fine..

Good Luck!!!

Hi Jeni! I have tried 3 rounds of clomid and they were unsuccessful. I took a break and now want to try soy to help me ovulate. What do you know about soy?

Hi Jeni,
My fiance and I have been ttc for only about 5 months. I know it's not that long, but he has 3 children all under the age of 6, so I know his boys can swim. I was taken off b/c in May due to a bad reaction to it. Could that have caused an issue with ovulation? Would it be too soon to see a R.E.? I'm only 24 and trying for my first and had a mc over a year ago (not with my fiance). What do you think?
